Have you ever sent an outreach email to a brand and heard crickets? How did it make you feel? Discouraged? Defeated? Rejected?
After sending emails to five brands that Danielle wanted to work with in 2019 but hearing no response, she gave up. In hindsight, she gave up way too soon.
Last year, one of Nicole’s clients almost gave up on pursuing sponsorships. Nicole drafted an email on their behalf, which was sent in October.
They did not hear back and assumed there was no interest in working together. Lo and behold, four months later, the brand replied with a favorable response. We were in business!
We share this to emphasize that acquiring sponsorship dollars can be a long game. There are no guarantees, and as with most things, consistency is key.
The truth is, you will not hear back from every brand you pitch. In fact, you may only hear from a small percentage. But even if someone isn't ready to pursue a partnership, a good pitch can seed future opportunities.
There are so many factors (some you can control and others you cannot) that contribute to a nonresponse, including:
The email automatically sent to spam
Contacting the wrong person
Missing a clear subject line
Long emails with little to no spaces
Not having a compelling hook or call to action.
However, like dating, there’s a brand out there who is your perfect match. But you have to put yourself out there continuously to increase your chances of success.
Let’s not forget that the more you practice pitching, the more you improve your pitching skills. Through trial and error, you learn to share your story more succinctly, communicate your partnership ideas, and confidently ask for what you want.
We know pitching is equalivent to selling, and for many people, selling is cringy. We get it, trust us! But just think about how many times you hear a McDonald’s commercial, which is a highly successful worldwide company.
If McDonald’s can continuously remind us of who they are, what they offer, and why we should support their business…what’s stopping you from doing the same?
